Greasemonkey - "Amazon Free Music" helper

Thu, 21 Apr 2005 comments
Amazon has lots of free non-DRM music available here It is a pain to click through to download, so I decided to write a quick userscript for Greasemonkey which skips the step of having to click to another page, and lets you get the music. Clicking some of the music results in amazon saying: "We're sorry. The track you requested isn't available." This is not a problem with my script, but Amazon limiting the number of downloads or something. There has been talk that they may limit downloads to non-USA users.

Update

I've converted the Greasemonkey script to be a extension, so you don't have to install Greasemonkey if you don't want to (although there are many more things one can do with it) You can install either of:
  • Firefox extension: amazon_music_helper.xpi (you have to allow firefox to install extensions from overstimulate. the first time you click it will say you are not allow, change the options to say you are allowed, then reclick the extension to install)
  • Greasemonkey version: Amazon Music Helper - requires Greasemonkey
ps. I offer my services building custom greasemonkey scripts

GreaseMonkey only works in FireFox, you can install it from: http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/ (you have to restart firefox after installing extensions) Then you go to the userscript (Amazon Music Helper), and go to your menu: Tools->Install Userscript Then you just browse to the Amazon Download sites

Oh thank you, thank you! I just spent WAY too much time downloading the freebies. At least the next time I do this, I can batch it.
  7. Fri, 22 Apr 2005 Abby says:
OK, I've installed it now, and I'm browsing. I'm not seeing anything new. How is it supposed to work?
  8. Fri, 22 Apr 2005 Patrick Haney says:
This is quite useful. I didn't even know about the Amazon Downloads page before, so thanks for the enlightenment.

Same problem as Abby. How does this work. I installed userscript and then went to Amazon site, nothing seems to happen. Am I supposed to run this script somehow?? Please respond. Thanks

Works great! Thank you for saving me many tabs and clicks!
  11. Fri, 22 Apr 2005 George Hotelling says:
Abby, gooster: Once the user script is installed, when you go to the Amazon page linked in the post, the links for songs will take you directly to the MP3 instead of another page. You don't need to do anything, just click on the links for the songs you want.

installed greasemoney, installed script, but while using download them all and music filter, still 208 links showing
  13. Fri, 22 Apr 2005 Jesse says:
It doesn't change the number of links, it changes that the links go directly to the music download (clicking asks you to save the file) instead of going to another page to click again.

Then you go to the userscript (Amazon Music Helper), and go to your menu: Tools->Install Userscript ================== Tools->Install Userscript is grayed out for me. On FF 1.03. What to do?
  15. Fri, 22 Apr 2005 Jesse says:
Joey, You need to actually have the script visible (it looks like a bunch of javascript), then do Tools->Install Userscript. It's located here: http://overstimulate.com/userscripts/amazon_music.user.js

it doesn't work for me either and I followed the directions as posted here. does it only work on PCs? I'm on a mac.
  18. Sat, 23 Apr 2005 Camilo says:
Your script is awesome! Oh so happy we are!!
  19. Sat, 23 Apr 2005 Jesse says:
I just tested it on my Mac. It still works for me. It does ask you to log in, as they require that before they send any mp3s to you. If this doesn't fix it for you, can you explain what your error is (you can email me a screenshot if it helps).
  20. Sat, 23 Apr 2005 jim says:
For some reason if I select Free Music/Dance DJ/Electronica.. I still have to jump through that extra "hoop".. script isn't working for that area (havent tested others)
  21. Sat, 23 Apr 2005 Jesse says:
Jim, my script works by only writing URLs where the document title contained the word "Free Music Download" (that way I don't mess up other pages on amazon). I updated it to only look for "Music Download", which may broaden where it works. If not, post here some pages/titles you where trying to download.

    Kickass!
  23. Sun, 24 Apr 2005 neckbone says:
thanks for the update! it now works on all of amazon's free mp3 pages.
  24. Mon, 25 Apr 2005 yaffn says:
When I installed Greasemonkey+your AFM helper, it broke my downloads window (FF 1.0.3). Instead of displaying normally, it would come up almost full screen, and completely blank. Disabling the script didn't help, but uninstalling did.
  25. Mon, 25 Apr 2005 Jesse says:
yaffn, I just updated it, can you try it again and tell me if you still have the same problem... Also, does this still work for other people?
  26. Sat, 25 Nov 2006 Joe says:
This doesn't work for me in FF2. It does bypass the separate download page. Example: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_j/104-6720354-7799942?url=search-alias%3Dmusic-dd&field-keywords=christmas&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go
