RFC2806 - Tel URIs

Fri, 26 Aug 2005 comments

One of our clients would like to be able to click a link inside their CRM (they're currently evaluating salesforce). Unfortunately I haven't found a sip softphone that works out of the box with tel uris (eg tel://8885551212)

If your softphone can be told to dial a number using the command line:

"C:\Program Files\xten\xten" 8885551211

Then you can modify your windows registry to answer tel: URIs and use "C:\sip_phone.exe" \1 as the helper (much like feed:// can be sent to your newsreader).

Then using either salesforce custom links, or a greasemonkey script to add links to all phone numbers, you can dial from a web based CRM.

The only problem left is Lingo a VoIP service that is great for non-US communication, doesn't seem to allow softphones to connect (or at least they won't tell you how!)

Have you tried VoipBuster? It supports callto:// in URLs "out of the box". Their SIP gateway is open. http://blog.davidkaspar.com/archives/2005/08/free-international-calls-with-voip.php

Very cool...I have a friend that works for Salesforce and I passed it along to him. This is nice idea.
