Taboo 0.2, Love

A new version Taboo has been released! Actually, we had a bad UI bug in 0.2, so two new versions of Taboo were posted today.

We put a lot of work into resolving improving the user interface, including a new details section, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Taboo now stores the favicon of sites as well, so when you save new tabs, you will see them in the dropdown list near the url bar.

The saved tabs on the "grid" view are now zoomable. You can make them as small as 100px or as large as 500px (for those of you with 30" LCDs). I personally like 225px wide, which is lets me see 4 tabs on each row on my laptop. Your preferred size is stored so you can set and forget.

In 0.1.6 (the previous version) we added a tooltip to show a larger view of the tabs. The idea was great but the implementation was lacking. In this version we implemented a preview that appears when you hover over a taboo. Then when you move the mouse (or hit a key) it disappears. I think this is a huge improvement, as I can read the text of the tabs I save before I load them now.

Lots of people have been asking for tags. I can say today, you will have to wait longer. In the mean time, we have added a notes section, where you can add annotations, which are included in the search results. You can implement a poor version of tagging using this screen. Ian and I have talked about how to improve this screen and add real tags (perhaps in the next release).

By popular demand, clicking the [+] button on the toolbar will now toggle between being saved and unsaved (as oposed to the previous behavior of updating the location on the page. We will be adding a context menu to update in a feature release.

Unfortunately TorButton (another Firefox extension) broke Taboo because it re-implements the session saver, but doesn't fully implement the changes in Firefox 3. We've added code to use the old-school Firefox 2 code when we detect TorButton. :(

There are lots of other small tweaks (including humanized messages). This release took too long because we tried to do too much. I think we learned our lesson and will be doing quicker releases with smaller goals. That said, syncing and sharing are being worked on in a branch but will take a while, but we will continue to make releases while we work on it.
